New Studies Demonstrate Reliable Efficacy Using LevitraT (vardenafil HCl)

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

New findings on the long-term benefits of LevitraT showed that men with erectile dysfunction (ED) taking LevitraT reported clinically significant, sustained improvement in erectile function (EF) over a two-year period. LevitraT was also shown to be a reliable and fast-acting agent for the treatment of ED in patients participating in clinical trials. Results from the new studies were presented earlier at the Second International Consultation on Erectile and Sexual Dysfunctions, Paris, France, a meeting supported by the World Health Organisation.

“It is impressive to find that LevitraT’s excellent efficacy is sustained for an extended period of time. If an ED drug loses its effect over time, the full benefits of treatment are lost and, as a result, men may lose confidence in their therapy and their sexual function,” said Dr Christopher Stief, a professor in the department of urology at Medizinische Hochschule in Hannover , Germany .

Study participants reported improved erectile function throughout two years

A total of 755 men with ED completed a one-year treatment period with LevitraT. Of those, 566 men agreed to continue to receive Levitra 10 mg or 20 mg in a double-blind study for an additional year. Of the 479 men who completed the study, two-year results showed:1

  • 9 in 10 men taking LevitraT reported improved erections throughout the study period (92% of men taking LevitraT 20 mg and 90% of men taking LevitraT 10 mg).
  • Not only did LevitraT significantly improve men’s erectile function, but study participants were reportedly five times more likely, on average, to maintain their erections through completion of sexual intercourse (89% vs. 17% at baseline for men taking LevitraT 20 mg and 87% vs. 16% at baseline for men taking LevitraT 10 mg).

Levitra is known to interact with the following drugs:

  • Nitrates: Nitrates are commonly used to treat angina, a symptom of heart disease. Nitrates include medicines like nitroglycerin found in tablets, sprays, ointments, pastes, or patches , isosorbide dinitrate and isosorbide mononitrate. Some recreational drugs called “poppers” also contain nitrates, such as amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate. Do not use Levitra if you are using these drugs.
  • Alpha-Blockers: Alpha-blockers are sometimes prescribed for prostate problems or high blood pressure. If Levitra is taken with alpha-blockers, your blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe level. You could get dizzy and faint.

Warnings:
Do not take Levitra if sexual activity can put an extra strain on your heart, especially if your heart is already weak from a heart attack or heart disease.

Precautions:
Before prescribing Levitra, it is important to identify potential underlying causes, as well as treatment options for Erectile Dysfunction.

History and Present Status

November 2001 to co-promote & co-develop a treatment for men against impotency. This was the first major attempt to promote a drug for Erectile Dysfunction after Viagra was launched way back in 1998. With their mutual expertise and combined skills, the two companies developed Levitra and offered it for the public consumption.

With their strong historical background in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, the Bayer and GSK co-promotion represented a powerful alliance committed to improve males’ sexual health through their new treatment therapy.

LEVITRA was successfully launched in the prime markets of United Kingdom in March, 2003. Soon thereof it was successfully distributed in other European countries. It won the U.S. approval on 19th August, 2003 to sell the drug. The drug was the first to rival Viagra from Pfizer. The announcement, from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) , meant that Levitra, an orange pill, will give men an alternative to Pfizer Inc.’s famous diamond-shaped blue pill Viagra, the drug that transformed impotence treatment after its 1998 debut as the first oral therapy for the impotence.

We cannot say that Levitra was extremely successful when its sales were compared to Viagra. But Levitra had its own advantages and men were always looking for something that promises better results at same cost. The drug is believed to work faster and longer as per the clinical trials. It offers efficacy of up to 24-hours. “We believe that Levitra offers the opportunity for increased satisfaction for many more men,” Andrew Witty, President, Europe , and GlaxoSmithKline had said in one of his statement.

IN one medical experiment involving 1,020 men with erectile dysfunction who took the drug for one year, the average success rate in maintaining erections improved to 87 % from 14 % with the 10 mg dose and to 86 % from 16 % with the 20 mg dose.

Through a clinical exploration backed by GlaxoSmithKline and Bayern AG - Levitra produced the desired results on very first attempts. It was considered to be more potent than Viagra. The drug tends to act faster and bring cherished pleasure for men coping with the challenge of Erectile Dysfunction.
